For multi-day backpacking trips in Maryland one of the only options is the Appalachian Trail, which can be accessed from numerous points along the Trail. This nearly 40-mile stretch of the A.T. is almost entirely situated in the mountains, so water can be scarce and is generally best located at designated springs, which are clearly marked on most maps. Campgrounds and shelters are accessible along the trail.

For more information, check out the A.T. Regulations.
